Keeping You On The Road Despite Spikes In Gas Prices

You’ve felt it at the pump, and gas prices are rising all over the United States. The Rocky Mountain region’s gas prices were up $1.27 a gallon from this time last year, and $.48 higher than the US. average price. The West Coast region has experienced similar trends. August 2, its retail gasoline prices were $3.91 per gallon, or $.76 a gallon higher than the U.S. average price. Mississippi, which typically is one of the states with the lowest gas prices, is seeing an increase year-over-year of $1.11 per gallon.

More Demand, Less Supply

The US demand for gasoline has returned to almost pre-pandemic normal levels, but supply has diminished. The Rocky Mountain region used to have 16 refineries, until HollyFrontier announced it was closing its refinery in Wyoming, which had 7 percent of the region’s total refining capacity. As of July 2021, total gasoline inventories were at its lowest level since 2013.

The West Coast region also experienced a supply reduction, when Marathon Martinez in California announced its closure in mid 2020. Phillips 66 refinery in California also recently announced it will stop refining petroleum renewable fuels. This will likely impact the state’s gasoline supply and imports.

Pipeline testing posed logistical constraints, which reduced flows of finished products and impacted customer deliveries. This low inventory has resulted in a spike in gas prices.

How This Impacts The Industries We Serve

For the trucking industry, higher gas prices is catastrophic. Transporting goods to and from warehouses, and ultimately to the consumer, is critical to our economy. Truckers are now paying a lot more to haul loads to destinations. Plagued with long hours, high turnover and now the gasoline crunch, the economy needs more truck drivers not less. But they are all feeling the pinch of the increasing gas prices.

The marine industries are experiencing the same pain, paying more in fuel to transport the same load.
